Poppies Planting and Care Instructions

Select a sunny location with good drainage. Remove any weeds from the area and use a rake to prepare a finely-tilled soil.

Gently scatter the seeds by hand, ensuring they are spread thinly across the ground to create a natural, scattered appearance. Depending on the specific variety, soil conditions, and temperature, germination may take anywhere from 7 to 30 days.

Keep the soil consistently moist during this period. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out, leaving approximately 30cm (12in) between each plant. Regularly water the area, especially during dry periods, but avoid excessive watering, as it can lead to fast growth, weak stems, or even rot.

To promote continuous blooming, remove faded poppy flowers by deadheading them regularly. If you wish to prevent the spread of poppies, discard faded flowers before they release seeds.

To harvest seed pods, cut them when they turn light brown and allow them to dry for 1-2 weeks. Then, break open the pods and store the seeds in a jar for up to two years. Once annual poppies have seeded, remove the parent plants and compost them.

In autumn, trim back the old foliage of biennials and perennials to ground level. Late summer is the ideal time to divide poppy clumps after they have finished blooming. Take care when separating them, as their taproots are sensitive and can be easily damaged if done too early.
